Goodbye island adventure

Finally, the day has come to leave Leo's island and return to Koror. After the last breakfast, the two packed up their belongings, folded the tent, cleaned up the utensils andthe clothes.  She removed Nancy's hammock from the tree. Miyoko and Michael carefully cleaned the sand so as not to leave any trash or disturbance. The canoe was pulled out of the brush and placed on the water.

The luggage was wrapped tightly in plasticand placed on the beach. Michael went to givethe final touch ups to his hut. Miyoko walked around the jungle and beach. She also gave final greetings to the peppers and okra, who were supposed to be her vitamin C.  Something shabby green sprout out, but Miyoko didn't know if it was weed or sprouting vegetables. The smoked fish, which is now as hard as leather boots, was removed from the string and buried in the jungle. The insects could eat as much as they wanted.

Miyoko walked further to see Michael's hut. The hut was still skeletal, but the beams on the triangular roof were up and secured.  Michael was starting to put up the floor. Bamboo is split vertically in half and lined up. This is a common way to make floors in Palau.

"You have a wonderful hut. Did you think it would be completed in a month?"

"No, I didn't even think it would go this far."

"Oh, yeah? Once you completed the floor with bamboo, what were you planning to do?"

"More bamboo for the wall as a low backrest, maybe.  Then thatch the roof with palm leaves? It doesn't matter really because I was doing this as a hobby and learning something in the meantime."

"You have done a lot so far. I wonder if Leo will continue to complete this."

"I don't think so. I don't think anyone will touch it. It will decay as it is."

"Isn't it a shame? Why don't you come back from Koror and complete it little by little?"

"No, it is a long way to come for such a small thing. This is fine."

    "Hmm, is that right?"

    "How about your textbook?"

"I made a lot of progress, but it's still a long way to go. At first, I intended to make only one volume, but I've come to think that it's better to make two volumes. I'll talk to the high school Principal as soon as I go back to Koror."

    "I hope it goes well."

"Yes, the question is whether the Principal can get a budget."

The vacation is over. Both Miyoko and Michael will be working from tomorrow.

Around noon, Daniel came to pick them up, again as promised, with the small red wooden boat. The three shook hands and exchanged greetings.

"How was the wind and waves today? Was it rough?"

Michael immediately asked what he was worried about. It may be troublesome if they had strong wind and high waves like when theycame.

"No, the sea is calm today. There is no problem at all. How was your life in this place? Was it good?"

Daniel sat down on the edge of the boat, hung his long legs in the water.  Michael was carrying their belongings into the boat.

    "Yeah, it was fun."

"I saw a half-built hut from the sea a few minutes ago.  Is that the hut you built?"

"Oh, yeah, do you want to see it?"

    "Yup."

The two walked toward the hut.  Miyoko sat on the bench with her elbows on the table and watched them walk away talking about something. Michael is tall, but Daniel is even taller, and the two soon disappeared beyond the curve of the beach.

Miyoko turned her eyes back to the bluelagoon in front of her. It is a completely different sea from the one the two enjoyed with the bioluminescence last night. The same noctiluca as last night may still be swarming in this clear water. It's just too bright to see.

Miyoko thought that she would never live on an uninhabited island like this again. Miyoko thought it was a fun month. She losther kitten, Banana, and goes back to Kororalone. And from tomorrow, the busy life of work begins.  Thinking of Banana, tears filled her eyes.

Eventually, Michael and Daniel came back with a laugh. Michael finished loading their belongings on the boat.  He tied the canoe tightly to the back of the boat with a rope, just like when they came.  Michael again decided to ride the canoe alone and to keep an eye so that the canoe wouldn't hit coral or get swamped. In today's condition, returning to Koror shouldn't be a problem.

The boat slowly left the beach, crosses the shallow waters, and passes the opening between the reefs. Looking back, the big table and bench under the tree that Miyoko worked on every day looked like it was waiting for someone. Looking from the sea, Miyoko could see the entire beach. Michael's hut stood alone at the outskirts of the beach. It stoodout very well when viewed from the sea. It would be great if there was a roof there. Michael, who was alone on the canoe far behind the boat, looked back at the hut many times.

Miyoko thought, "Beautiful lagoon, white sandy beach, those transparent small crabs, cool jungle, I thank you all for letting uslive with you for a month. Malnourished skinny crabs, poor sea urchins, I apologize to you all for taking your life in my regret. To the tasteless smoked fish, you were beautiful when you were alive. I'll never forget you guys. "

Miyoko dedicated her heartfelt gratitudeto the island and its creatures. At Miyoko's feet, there is a pale pink clam the size of a rugby ball that Michael found.  That day wasfiercely hot.  Miyoko intends to keep this in her apartment in Koror. The boat passed by the island of Banana.

"Good-bye, Banana. You are a foolishlittle cat which didn't want to come out of the jungle to me. It was only a short time, but thank you for living with me."

The boat kept moving.  Miyoko's tears were blown away as soon as they flowed. The island quickly disappeared from her sight.
