A sparkling sea

Miyoko and Michael's island adventure was nearing the end. The wind continued to blow stubbornly, and it was only the week before leaving the island that the weather slightly calmed down. Aside from the strong wind, the weather was fine and it rained periodically. They should not complain.

Miyoko and Michael sat in a pleasant grassy place at dusk and enjoyed an amazingly beautiful sunset almost every day. They atefreshly cooked rice on a flat shellfish plate. While the taste of the smoked fish was not what they had expected, the colors of the sunset or shapes of the clouds clearly made up for it. It was as if they were watching art work from god.  For most days the two just silently watched the endless burning sky, changing colors like a flower garden. It wasthe time when pure respect for nature filled up their hearts.

One calm, dark night without wind, Miyoko was reading a book in the tent with a flashlight.  Michael, who was walking the beach, came back with a loud shout.

    "Miyoko, Miyoko!"

Miyoko grabbed a flashlight and shown the light outside through the net. Michael walkedfrom the beach.

    "What? What happened?"

"Come out quickly. It's a great bioluminescence."

Miyoko jumped out of the tent when she heard this. When she went to the beach with Michael, the sea was dark and quiet. The silent waves lapped the beach and crumbledslightly, creating delicate bubbles like white lace.  As the waves moved with a pleasant noise, the bioluminescence left behind in the sand shone as it was an imprint of the linesof the waves. A thin crescent moon hangs in the sky. It was a beautiful starry night.

Miyoko stepped into the water and kicked the seawater. The area around the ankle and the surface where the droplets flew shined silver for a moment, and then quietly returned to the original dark water. This technically called “noctiluca” or sea sparkle. It glows only when it is stimulated.  Looking down, Noctiluca is shining in the water, sticking to Miyoko's feet. Even though the seawater was dark, she could see each toe clearly. Miyoko went into the sea little by little. When shedisturbs the seawater, the surrounding water shines like a boiling river of silver.

When Miyoko entered the water chest deep, she looked down. The noctiluca was stuck all over Miyoko’s shorts and shirt.  Even in the dark, the wrinkles of the cloth looked clear as if they were woven with silver lines. When she raised her arms out of the water, the Noctiluca shimmered and dripped into the dark sea surface like a jewel.

Michael hit the water hard with his hands. The entire area around Michael shined brightly in a silver stardust, and then quietly returned to the dark sea. Miyoko could see hissilver legs like the sculpture of Michael as he moved in the water. Shining noctiluca surrounded his entire body. Miyoko quietly started to swim a slow breaststroke. The area around Miyoko's arm shimmered. Michael was swimming as well and with each stroke there was cascading fireworks. Are there tens of billions of phytoplankton noctiluca in this water? The glowing seawater was fantastic, but when you think about it, it becomes somewhat creepy. Noctiluca is actually single-celled “insect”.  Miyoko scooped seawater on her palm and squinted to see if she could see the marine life. However, she couldn't see anything that looked like an insect.  Judging from the intensity of the light, it is certain that noctiluca are very, very densely floating in this area. Noctiluca probably had drifted to this area from daytime. Miyoko just didn't notice it because she couldn't see it until after sunset.

Michael swam toward Miyoko. Coming to the immediate vicinity of Miyoko, she saw Noctiluca stays on Michael’s hair and eyebrows, even on the eyelashes and chin.

"This is beautiful, but it's all living things. Isn't it a little weird?" Miyoko said.

"It's normal to have fish eggs, plankton, coral spores, in the seawater. Don't think too much."

Michael said with a laugh, pulling Miyoko's hand further offshore.  Miyoko got on the back of Michael, who was breast-stroking,and lifted her neck like a turtle. The distant starry sky was silver, the surrounding seawater was silver, and Michael was also silver. The seawater that Michael stirs glows silver, but the seawater in remote areas is black, heavy and quiet. If a fish swims in this water, it would look very beautiful by stirring the seawater with its fins. Miyoko and Michael swam around in the silver lagoon to late night.  The luminous insects stayed on the beach until they left the island a few days later, entertaining Miyoko and Michael every night.
