Banana Island

Upon returning to Koror, Miyoko was busy with the final setup for her textbooks, events for the new school year, and new classes with new students.

One day in October, Miyoko was at a recently opened vegetable store which sold fresh vegetable coming from Ryan’s Iboban Agricultural high school. Several Miyoko’s students who had finished their school day are leaning against the window of the store to see what Miyoko would buy.

    Suddenly someone called "Miyoko".

Miyoko raised her eyes and found the young man from Peleliu. Today, he is smiling amiably showing his teeth. Miyoko wondered if she would be informed of Banana’s death.

"Banana is a good cat. We don't kill him."

Miyoko was surprised before she was happy.

    "What happened?"

"Banana is eating mice. Until now, even if scrub fowl laid eggs, mice took the eggs in the nest. However, after Banana came to the island, mice no longer steal eggs. "

"Well, it was wonderful. Then, Banana did not attack scrub fowl after all."

"Right. Mice are easier to catch, I guess."

"Yes ... Banana has been eating mice."

"We now call the island Banana Island, because Banana is the lord of that island."

    The young man smiled.

    "Banana Island ..."

    Miyoko repeated.

"Please take good care of Banana. He is a good cat. He will surely be the guardian of the island."

    "It's okay. Don't worry."

The young guy then has left.

Miyoko forgot what she intended to buy and stood still for a while.

What the young man said was a great peace of mind for Miyoko. The image of Banana suffering from eating poisonous bait has been occupying Miyoko’s mind.

It's been over four months since Banana was gone. Now that he has survived so long, it seems that Banana has completely adapted to the island life. Bananas became the master of the island.

    "This is good."

Miyoko once again took a sigh of relief. One of the students leaning against the shop window stopped the young man. They wanted to know what the young man from Peleliu has business with their teacher, Miyoko. Other students are also approaching. The windows are now crowded with school children. The story of Banana Island will be well known by tonight.

This is the end of the story between Miyoko and Banana, the cat.

A few months later, Miyoko received more pleasant news.  Nancy and Mack got married and decided to leave Palau. At that time, Nancy had a cat.  The cat was a female that lived outside in the yard. This cat recently gave birth to kittens. Nancy visited Miyoko, hopingMiyoko, a cat lover, would take care of her mother cat and kittens.

However, Miyoko didn't think that a cat with kittens living outside would easily give up her territory, and accept a new human’s care.

Miyoko suggested Nancy to bring the mother cat and kittens to Banana Island. Miyoko was willing to bring the cat family by herself if Nancy didn't have time.  However, before leaving Palau, Nancy gathered her cats, and brought them to Banana Island. Banana suddenly had a bride and children at the same time. Miyoko prayed that Banana and his bride would eventually have more kittens of their own and live in the island for a long time.

You too, cat?
