Michael catches a lot of fish

One day, the wind suddenly weakened. The sea is not completely calm, but it was a big difference compared to the day before. Even though the wind had weakened, it was clear that the sea was still too rough to paddle to the island of Banana. However, the two still may be able to catch fish in a nearby reef. Miyoko and Michael have only lately eaten rice or taro.

Before the weather changed, the twostarted canoeing to the sea outside the reef soon after breakfast. By the point whereMiyoko could see the island of Banana in the distance, Michael lowered the anchor, and jumped into the sea with his spear gun.

As usual, he was looking for fish by repeatedly diving and surfacing. Michael gradually moved away from the canoe. Miyoko didn't go into the sea and was sitting in the canoe. Even though it is still early in the morning, the sun is already shining strong.Miyoko has been sick of this weather.  When Palauan sea is calm, it beautiful reflecting clouds like a mirror.  How come the wind blows for so many weeks only when Miyoko was livingin the island and needed calm seas?  What an unfortunate luck!

Palau is composed by hundreds of small islands shaping a form of an elongated potato. Koror, where Miyoko lives and the capital of Palau, is almost at the center of all the territory.  Leo's island, where Miyoko and Michael are now residing, is far south to the edge of the potato-shaped island group.

Miyoko suddenely realized that Michael wasfar away and screaming something at her while actively swinging his spear gun over his head.Because of the wind, Miyoko could not hear what he was saying. Miyoko's heart jumped up to her throat.  Was it an accident? Sharks came to her mind, but sharks are everywhere in these waters.  Michael wouldn't be surprised if he sees a shark. What is it?

Miyoko immediately pulled up the rope of the anchor as quickly as possible.  However, it seemed that the anchor was stuck in a rock or coral on the way up, and did not come up. Looking back, Michael is still calling to her.  Miyoko grabbed a bucket in the canoe, took out the shirts and towels from the bucket. Then she removed the rope of the anchor from the canoe, and tied the rope firmly to the handle of the now-empty bucket. Miyoko's heart was throbbing like hitting a bell. She threw the bucket into the sea, and paddled the canoetoward Michael.

Miyoko's arms are not strong enough to handle the canoe. Rather than moving forward, the canoe turned to right and left. Did the canoe move forward, or did Michael swim closer to the canoe? Miyoko clenched her teeth for a while and went crazy to paddle the oar. A hand appeared on the side of the canoe, followed by Michael's face wearing a googles. Michael was laughing.

"I said you didn't have to come. Didn't you hear me?"

"I couldn't hear you." Miyoko stopped paddling and shouted back to him. "What was wrong?"

"Nothing was wrong. I found a big school of fish in reef over there."

"Well, I was scared that you got into anaccident."

"Well, no accident this time. Let's bring the canoe to that reef where I found the fish."

"I left the anchor back there. It didn’t come up.  I tied a bucket to the rope and let it float.  Please go to collect the anchor"

Looking back, a blue bucket floated on the surface of the sea, moving up and down. Michael put the spear gun in the canoe and swam towards the bucket. Soon, he came back with the bucket and the anchor.

He climbed into the canoe, and paddled slowly checking the sea carefully, and stopped at a certain place he liked.

Michael went into the sea again with the spear gun. Then he dove straight down.

In no time, Michael came up with a beautiful pink fish at the tip of the spear gun.  He threw the fish into the canoe, and dove down again.

The fish is about 2 feet long and has a smooth pink body with one blue line. It's a beautiful fish. Michael caught the same kind of fish again and emerged.

Miyoko didn't enter the sea for fear of scaring the fish. Miyoko knows most of the fish that inhabit these coral reefs, but she was unfamiliar with this one.

Sharks are also one of the fish Miyoko is familiar with. Sharks are often found in the tropical waters. It usually swims slowly in the distance. Miyoko has never met a hugeshark. The largest one was probably about six feet. However, everything looks big in the water. But what Miyoko was most scared of waswhen she encountered a big fat tuna, not a shark. The spindle-shaped body of tuna looked so powerful and intimidating by itself, but more than that, it was its tight mouth and big eyeballs that scared her. Miyoko knew that tuna do not bother humans, but its face lookedextremely fierce to her.

Previously, there was a joint barbecue party between the Palau High School staff and the Ministry of Education officials. As they all enjoyed barbecue on one of the island beaches, a shark of about two feet came toswim near the beach. At that time, most people were drinking and eating around the barbecuetable, and no one was in the ocean.  Miyoko was sitting alone on the beach looking at the sea. The sea was shallow, the sand was pure white, and the seawater was transparent.  Miyoko was looking at the gray shark swimming toward the shore. Miyoko wondered how come ashark would swim toward the shore where there is no food.  Then, the Minister of Education who had a beer bottle in his hand, walked upto MIyoko, and pointed toward the shark raised his index finger as if to say "Look".  He then made a huge yell. It was a splendid yell from the bottom of his belly.  It resembled an explosive martial arts shout.

Surprisingly, the shark quickly turned around and swam away literally in a straight line toward the open ocean. It was no longer a slow saunter but flew like an arrow. It must have gotten the surprise of his life. The shark apparently heard the Minister’s yell from the beach. Until then, Miyoko didn't really respect this liquor-loving, beer-belly minister, but this event changed her mind. Isn't it cool to have a Minister of Educationwho can get rid of a shark with just one yell?

Michael caught more than 20 of the same pink fish in the next hour or so.  They can't eat this much at once, but in preparation for more rough seas, Miyoko came up with the idea of smoking and drying the fish.  When you have strong sunlight like that of Palau, it must be easy to make dried fish. Dried fish will last a long time. It is convenient to have dried fish for windy days. As a matter of fact, the wind again is getting stronger. The canoe is being lifted up and down with the waves. Miyoko does not like this kind of repeating movement at all.
